Bill and I left Louisville at 9 AM Sunday June 28, 2009. Drove to Madison, WI, for the night, no rain, no problems. Stayed at the Hampton Inn, same one we've stayed in the last 2 trips. Wore shorts, was hot all day. Madison was about 80 degrees, windy.
This morning, Monday, we went to Baraboo, about an hour from Madison, to the International Crane Foundation, to see the 15 types of cranes of the world... fantastic site! Very educational, and loved seeing all the birds, even whooping cranes which are rarely on view even if a zoo has some. The African cranes are gorgeous. For info about the place, you can read about it at their website http://www.savingcranes.org/
The photos below are some of the cranes.
The blue cranes from Africa did not come outside, but did come to the doorway and we did see them a little bit, have beautiful tails of black feathers that hang down and almost to the ground, much like a peacock. They said they had only been here a week and were still adjusting to the new surroundings. A couple others are not in the photos, haven't had time to identify the types, you see if you can! ... The bird in photo 1 and photo 5 are the same type bird. The bird in photo 3 is a different bird... see if you can tell the difference!!
We left the cranes about 1:15, ate at Cracker Barrel, then drove a little past Minneapolis, stopped for the night in Rogers, MN, about 20 miles west, staying again in a Hampton Inn, Bill's choice if we can find one. Temperatures today have ranged from 68 to 72... didn't expect to get away from the heat so quick, but so glad we did!!
